If I Ran the Zoo: Gun Control

Written in 1950, If I Ran the Zoo is my favorite book by Dr. Seuss. As much as I enjoy the story, I appreciate the underlying theme even more: If I was in charge of this wacky country that we call home, here are the unconventional ideas I would pursue. This is one of those ideas.

Common Sense

Alison and I were lucky enough to spend a month in Québec City, Canada last summer. During our time there, we learned a lot about Canada and its many similarities to the United States. For example:
Picture
Statistic
United States
Canada
Area
3.79 million square miles
3.85 million square miles
Literacy
99%
99%
Life expectancy
78 years
81 years
GDP per capita
USD$47,106
USD$47,567
But then, of course, there are guns and gun violence. Those statistics look like this:
Statistic
United States
Canada
Murders involving a gun
8,813
172
Murders per 100,000 people
5.0
1.8
Guns per capita
1.13
0.31
License required
No
Yes
Background check required
No
Yes
Personal references required
No
Yes
Mandatory waiting period
No
Yes
Safety course required
No
Yes
Triple the guns, triple the murders. The answer to the gun violence in the United States is simple:
Fewer guns in the hands of fewer, better vetted and trained people will reduce gun violence.
"But wait," people will say, "you are treading on my 2nd amendment rights. The framers of the Constitution have promised me that..."
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
To that, I would answer that neither the 2nd amendment nor the Constitution itself is inviolate. Remember, these are the same founding fathers that framed a Constitution in which:
  • Women did not have the right to vote
  • Black people could be legally owned by white people!
As a nation, we've managed to come to our senses regarding those two abominations. It's time that we did the same for the 2nd amendment and introduced some common sense.

If I Ran the Zoo: Term Limits

"You've had your turn"

Years ago I heard a phrase that has stuck with me and describes in succint fashion the root cause of the dysfunction in Washington: "the politics of self-preservation." In short, the first priority of a politician is to be re-elected; the second priority is to do his or her job. The obvious problem with these priorities is that the execution of the second is compromised by the pursuit of the first.

In my home state, the Governor of Virginia has no life-term limit, but cannot serve consecutive terms: one and out. To quote ballotpedia.org, "this was once a common provision among America's gubernatorial offices, but Virginia is now the only state that continues to apply it." I think that this solution is perfect -- by eliminating the first priority, the only priority is to do your job.

If I ran the zoo, I would apply these same limits to both Congress and the presidency. To compensate for the inability to stay in office for a second consecutive term, I propose that all existing term lengths be extended by two years:
  • President -- 6 years
  • Senators -- 8 years
  • Representatives -- 4 years
That should give each person ample time to accomplish their objectives before they move on (and move on they must).

If I Ran the Zoo: Tiny Weddings

If I Ran the Zoo

Written in 1950, If I Ran the Zoo is my favorite book by Dr. Seuss. If you don't own a copy yourself, go out and buy one so that you can have one on hand the next time you have youngsters visiting.

As much as I enjoy the story, I appreciate the underlying theme even more: If I was in charge of this wacky country that we call home, here are the unconventional ideas I would pursue.

In that spirit, this new blog category will introduce some of those ideas.

Here's the first one...

Tiny Weddings

If I ran the zoo, weddings would be small, informal affairs. After all, getting married is the easy part. Staying married is where the real effort lies.

So, why do we celebrate the wedding with such hoopla? Do baseball teams kick off spring training with a parade? No, that's saved for the World Series victors.

Similarly, we should celebrate the marriage victors. Let the bride and groom get married on their own at the courthouse and then invite back a few dozen friends and family for burgers and beer in the back yard.

Let's save the major celebration (tents, caterers, tuxedos) for their 10th wedding anniversary. At that point, they have invested their time and energy and emerged victorious from the marriage gauntlet. Plus, by waiting 10 years, their young children can attend the wedding! (That happens today, of course, but carries the inevitable "out of wedlock" stigma.)
