Bozeman 2017 - The Route

A little planning never hurts

Alison and I are not the kind of people that plan our vacations way in advance or in excruciating detail. We will pick a place to visit, like we did for Bozeman back in February, and then we do some very informal research online about the place. Now that we're about six weeks out from our launch date, I decided to look at a map and calculate our route. It is 2200 miles away, after all, so we've got a whole bunch of options for how to get from Point A to B.

The route

At present, we plan to take the route pictured here. You can click that photo to enlarge it, or see a live version on the Roadtrippers website.

Our anticipated overnight stops will be in:

• Indianapolis, Indiana
  • to visit Nathan
• Madison, Wisconsin
  • to show Alison where I went to graduate school
• Chamberlain, South Dakota
  • A convenient place to launch our exploration of the western half of the state
• Deadwood, South Dakota
  • That's a no-brainer
• Devil's Tower, Wyoming
  • I've been waiting for this since November 16, 1977
• Billings, Montana
  • The largest city in Montana and just a hop and skip over to Bozeman

Tidbit

Early in the 1920s, Charles Lindbergh worked briefly as an airplane mechanic at the Billings Municipal Airport. When the first winter set in, he headed to Georgia and flew anywhere and everywhere he could, culminating in his famous transatlantic flight in 1927.
