Chez Johnson

Friends

We now have a few friends here in Québec City: Amèlie, our neighbor; Ariane, our Airbnb host; and the Johnson Family, also vacationing here from Lexington, Virginia. The Johnsons just returned to QC after spending a week up north, so Alison pedaled over to their house and spent the day with them. In the evening, Alison and I both took a long walk over to their house for dinner.

Tidbit

Canada did not have an official, national flag before 1965. Their flag features a stylized, 11-point maple leaf inside a white square, both on a red background. The white square is half the width of the flag; the red, vertical stripes are each one half the width of the square; and both the maple leaf and the entire flag are horizontally symmetric. The flag looks the same from either side, and even in your rear-view mirror.

The number and arrangement of the 11 points on the maple leaf have no special significance. Rather, the designers of the flag put different possible leaf designs (more points, fewer points, different point placement) into a wind tunnel to determine which would look the least blurry in windy conditions. The flag we see won.
